Post subject: Dark Gryphon plays Dwarf Fortress. A day by day log.
Day One:
Fetal Position.
Day Two:
Ended up placing the Dwarves in the middle of a mountain. They were all quickly killed by wolves.
Still haven't figured out the controls.
Day Three: Found out about designations. Wolves ate them again.

Since you've said that you'll be refusing to look at the wiki I'll offer one tidbit of info per log.
Dwarves require booze or they work slower.

Keep going, they'll begin to make sense.
Pumps that are not made of materials with a high enough melting point cannot pump magma without bursting into flame...usually after flooding your fortress with burning death.

d -> h = Channelling. This digs a hole into the z plane below the designated area and creates a ramp on the lower z plane as long as there is a solid wall on one side of the square.
