Whoever voted for Quakewars, great pick... I would've too but I thought Savage 2 might have a chance. Can't stand CS in any form. Oh well maybe next lan. |

That has been the great debate for years in the club. Where on the spectrum are we (the club) trying to play, classic-modern-newest. I've always been a proponent that the modern portion of the spectrum is where tournaments belong. Not directly tied to popularity. Classics and Newest belong in the free play/special event categories. I think CS falls into the classic realm and thus should be relegated to outside the club sponsored event not a TigerLAN central event. It is certainly popular enough to spawn its own event without the club pushing it as a tournament.
Mostly I am concerned with the environment created at the LAN by a game with fans as fanatical as CS. Usually there are 20-30 PCs at the LAN and if 15 or more of them are playing CS odds are they will not play anything else for the duration. Thus ruining the freeplay potential of the LAN for other games. When I attend TigerLAN I try to introduce/train people on games I play, and in turn agree to try theirs out. I find fanatical fan based games like Starcraft and CS tend to completely eliminate that environment.
Last TigerLAN, despite being known as the dreaded "starcraft guy" (probably the epitome of the "fanatics" you speak of), I suggested GTA2, Soldat, Deus Ex, and X-COM: Interceptor for free play. Nobody took me up on my offer and the only free-play I got were all games of brawl, UT3, UT2k4, Starcraft and that PS2 sword fighting game (the only obscure game I really got to try). I believe I played a game of starcraft with you, I recall that I suggested GTA2 specifically to you and you said no.
I voted quake wars because I haven't tried it Savage 2 is more boring than watching paint dry and I don't have the other two games (and therefore have never tried them). So perhaps if someone lets me use their computer i'll be able to try CS, I might like it, I might hate it. |

@katona: I don't support GTA on principal sorry. But I would have tired Deus Ex or X-Com for sure. I don't know Soldat so I would have asked for a sales pitch.
I actually would like to come this time and play a deathmatch of SC again. You were not the single minded SC fans I'm used to, but you were a bit difficult to get out of your shell. I found it difficult to get you to try Savage 2 for more than 1/2 a match. But I will give you credit for trying Savage 2. Most fanatics would never have done so.
Unfortunately, I have some meetings in Huntsville the week before the LAN. So I would have to do some significant negotiation to not loose all my points with the wife. (can't leave her with the kid forever with zero support) The risk of CS maddness plus a deal me and Xero were trying to work out with a game company fell through, all lead to me deciding not to come this time. |
