Well, I cooked up some things tonight. It's not exactly what I had in mind when I started, but i'm too tired to mess with it more tonight.
Anyhow: (BEWARE, PDF files, so don't get all pissed when reader opens)
http://www.auburn.edu/~boglecj/flyer/flyer1.pdf
I don't think it's minimal enough, but at least it's different than the last one. Oh, and I just guessed games and the date and stuff...
I was actually thinking something more minimal might stand out better, like:

There's no such thing as TFC 1.5.
(Pet peeve, heh, the 1.5 version numbers of pre-Steam games came from CS 1.5)
And last year we played the Steam version anyway. |

| I'm not digging the "cut out coupon" look of the first flyer. work on it. |

Yeah, it does look rather couponish. Problem is, with that much space, and the amount of info needed on the flyer. It's gotta be crowded. I might have to just cut some of the info. Oh, and I have some ideas to mess with it in photoshop. The coupon thingy was just a quick hack in InDesign.
And @ satertek. I just copied some of the games from the old flyer.
Oh, and I might just have to make a simple straight layout. See, the problem is, with no color it's hard to do alot of fine detail and such, you gotta contrast alot of stuff or it looks like shit printed. |

| Just a side note but some people may not know what room the exhibit lounge is so the room number might be of some help. |

heuristics:
- no more than 2 fonts, 3 if one is only for effect if statement.
- keep it simple.
- determine exactly what info needs to be displayed and display only that.
- of what is displayed, determine what is most important then make that stand out.
- remember how they will be read: by people walking by, possibly looking at flyers at random, with nothing to write on and memory logged with other thoughts.
- jargon can be both your friend and your worst enemy; "LAN Party" for example is great if ppl know what it is. sucks if they don't.
- know your target audience: college-aged hardcore, average, and casual gamers, some in college, some not.
- if the flyer doesn't provide all the info then it should point to where the info is. when it doesn't provide the info, determine how much it needs to present to generate enough interest to have the audience follow-up.
- make sure the presentation is in line with those inclined to read it (think of the diff between Apple commercials and MS commercials or PS3 vs Wii)
I always took it as the important things on the flyer were (in order):
- there was a lan party happening
- lan party translates into multiplayer gaming for those that don't know "lan party"
- on a certain date
- verifying it is at AU and by an AU community (club)
- noting there were benefits for coming other than gaming
- that other info was on our website
- that the gaming industry is helping with the event
- that it's part of a series of like events (TigerLAN N)
A secondary effect for me was that I thought the games themselves were not important to be on there but might catch a passer-by's eye better than anything else on the flyer.
I personally think my TL flyers were too busy usually.
One thing to remember (nobody in town really knows the name "TigerLAN" even those that have been before).
Maybe three times more people really know what "LAN Party" means.
Roughly 70% of Auburn plays games.
Roughly 50% of Auburn plays games with friends.
Roughly 20% of Auburn would be willing to do more than show up.
Roughly 5% would be willing to move their computer.
Note that these numbers are conjecture based on US stats ran through my head and applied to Auburn. |

lol..
Anyways, I did say I was going to make it simpler. Those were just things I made up after 32 hours of no sleep and whatnot.... |

| Don't underestimate TigerLan xero. yes many people know what a lan party is. But TigerLAN is gaining a reputation. I've got people on my website, and around town asking me about it. |

And that's the way it should be ;o)
It was more a comment about "LAN Party" gets more people than "TigerLAN" and "Video Games" probably gets more than "LAN Party"
But being a college town, "Free Food!" ftw. |

| Don't forget to mention that there is a cost and that ladies come for free. Guys generally ignore the cost, so long as the other part comes with it. |

| Personally, I like the second...but only if we put it up about a month and a half in advance, so people see the name and know it's coming, and so they can go ahead and look up the information. However, about two weeks before the event, switch to the other flier. Problem is, that one's a bit busy. First, while the game list is important, since we didn't separate competition games from others, it would create confusion and often piss off the fans of specific titles that didn't have competitions (I'm looking at you, HALO). While I like the layout of the first one, there's a few things I'd cut...the center column of sponsors, for instance, while dividing the consoles from the titles, will add confusion as to why it's separate from the lower group of sponsors. Pick a spot, but the bottom would probably be better. Also, limit the fonts to 2, and make sure they contrast, but not in a way that's painful to look at. if they're too similar, then picking the same font would be a better choice. If they're too different, then it hurts the eye and nobody wants to look at it. A serif/slab serif style, and then a sans serif would be good choices. Try not to use too many decorative fonts, as that will also hurt the eyes. |

Yeah yeah yeah, I already told you I fixed the fonts
Anyhow, I suppose to make it less busy i can only list the tournament games.
How many tournaments in total are there... and what platforms. (I know we went over it at the meeting but i forgot) |

I have a question:
Do we have to put the sponsors on the flyer?
If it's not required it would be nice for freeing up some space in the design. |

Thanks..
Adding more games to the flyer is unnecessary imo..
When the tournament polls are finished I'll grab the popular games that won and stick them on there so nobody can complain that there isn't a tourny for a game on the flyer.
I think listing all the games is rather pointless. The purpose of the game listing is to have another way to catch someone's eye. If they don't recognize a handful of games then they probably won't recognize the rest. Also, I don't want to put a corny "And more!!!" at the end.... |
