Looks like Global Agenda has worked out well as Hi-Rez has snagged the Tribes franchise license.
Really excited to see what they can do with it. GA already had a bunch of similarities, I'm sure they'll start with it as a foundation.
(Think you can score us some alpha invites again Xero? )

Tribes the MMO?
Excuse me while I die a little more on the inside.
Unless they somehow manage to allow for truly huge battles (IOW: None of that Small team instanced nonsense that I could play in other shooters that don't claim to be MMOs) they aren't getting a red cent from me. |

Bah. This is more like, even bigger Tribes battles on a battle map that is persistent, where you character gets perks for leveling.
Did you play Global Agenda? |

No, but I have in the thousands of hours of playtime dedicated to the Tribes games (mostly Tribes 2), have been an avid player/proponent of Planetside, and have done my research on Global Agenda and other pseudo MMOFPS titles of that nature.
In Tribes 2 you had a game that could support a large population of players, deployable/destroyable support structures, pilot-able vehicle some of which require multiple passengers for full tactical efficiency, a rather complex "commander view" for implementing RTS-like strategies, an integrated emailing and clan construction system, and statistics tracking.
I've played on servers with well over the 50 mark in players online (in the same server). This is what I call a large population...for an FPS.
Global agenda is much the same. The key difference being uniting what would be the results of multiple independent servers' battles into a somewhat persistent larger world.
Instead of independent servers' battles you have instanced battles.
Instead of simply collecting statistics, you have a persistent world that is altered to some degree by the result of your instanced battles.
My "issue" with a Tribes MMO in the same vein of Global Agenda is as follows:
Battles of Global Agenda scale are not new to the Tribes universe or FPS games in general. This is a personal baseline for expectation.
My complaint and reasoning stems from my belief that Planetside and games like it defined an MMOFPS.
Being massively multiplayer means interacting with a large group of individuals in the same game. Now if we leave it at that Global Agenda could well be considered an MMO. However, in my mind, it isn't.
FPS games that do not claim to be Massively Multiplayer host numbers equal to or exceeding the numbers of players in any given instanced GA bout on a regular basis. Since the default form of interaction in an MMOFPS is the FPS element, I cannot rightly consider a game that boasts a same or reduced number of interactions an MMO.
Planetside in its prime maintained a persistant world and hosted numbers in each battle that easily dwarfed the player capacity of normal FPS games. There was no means short of joining another true MMOFPS of interacting directly in a FPS format with that many players.
This is why I have some trouble considering Global Agenda or games like it to be MMOFPSs. They may be, by definition, an MMOFPS...but they do not meet my personal smell test. Instead I see them as ... Quake Wars with strange and unjustified fees attached.
Ultimately I'm not saying I'm right. I'm just saying that I hope they make the game something I can be excited about, rather than Global Agenda with better name recognition. |

I agree. Planetside was a very unique experience that hasn't been replicated since. I have no clue why tbh, other than that games not marketable on consoles aren't produced by companies other than Valve or Blizzard anymore. |

Next up: "HALO is overblown"
Scorpion posts a long, out of date and difficult to follow drunken treatise on why he believes the HALO series is mediocre at best and its proponents are ignorant bottom feeders who wouldn't know a decent shooter if it shot them, much less what good sportsmanship entails. |

if that was a drunken rant, you sir, either:
A) Have a good spell checker
B) Are rather clear when you are drunk
C) May have forgot to post and in the morning proofread it and then posted it
D) are a robot
E) have 19 toes
F) are the equivalent of when a brick meets a banana and decides to get it on.
Whatever the case maybe, kudos sir, kudos... |

We knew he was dangerous the first night at Gamer's Club. That is why I had him renamed to something more menacing, rather than the RQ297 name or whatever the hell it was. Or maybe it was the 100% scorpion army he built in Age of Empires, I'm not really clear on which. |

Ya got me. All the above.
But on the whole being clear when drunk thing...you'd have to ask xero, Vandyl, or Hellcat. |

It's called Tribes Ascend now and while I've only gotten one game in, it's pretty slick.
I don't like the F2P, unlockable weapon aspects, but it really does feel like Tribes.
I'm digging it.
