So, now I know what I'll probably be doing from 2011 until the world ends.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/12 ... next-year/

If they allow for the battles I remember, it will be time well spent.

Nothing like piloting a relatively lightly armed transport aircraft with 10 squaddies loaded and ready to fight. For a brief moment a whole 3rd of the server is depending on you to make a perfect run to a drop location all the while nearly 600 people fight below and at least 2/3s of them would like nothing more than to blow you out of the sky. You study the tactical map mid-flight, seeing where the firefights are erupting and trying to steer clear of the big ones, all the while knowing that each second counts. If you can't get that squad to the back door of their chosen target in time the enemy is going to start reinforcing the position, and then it'll take a darn sight more than a simple squad or two to force 'em out. So eventually you have to take a risk. You end up barreling through the air above an unengaged enemy armor battalion, they start firing AA and call out for air support to knock you down. Flack, bullets, and missiles pound the craft as you approach the destination, the signal is given and suddenly you're all alone in hostile skies; your charge is in a controlled descent to the ground below.

Feeling accomplished you speed off and go low in an attempt to disappear over the next hill or treeline, shaking off pursuit as the the squad you dropped has become a higher priority target. Somewhere, a handful of kilometers away you set down and perform what repairs you can before an emergency call is issued. For whatever reason the on site commander has decided that the squad needs evac. Guess whose job it is to somehow pull them out of the fire....

Planetside and new Tribes MMO. You'd think whomever is footing the bill for one of those would have been smart enough to say "Hey, the other one is coming out and it will be the only competition. I should probably just wait another year or two when the hype on the other has died down."

This type of thinking sounds good on paper but doesn't function all that well in practice.

Successfully pulling that off would require companies to pay information gathering expenses and have the means to completely suspend all economic activity until their prime release date rolls around.

Funding a staff means that there is a breaking point. Upon reaching this breaking point the product must be released or you go out of business. Just approaching the point can have a serious detrimental effect on your bottom line as you expenses do not stop just because you've decided to abstain from revenue creation with the hope that you'll make slightly more overall.

It is almost like being shot in the chest, but refusing to call the ambulance due to some misguided belief that if you wait a day for your car to get out of the shop you'll save some money on your hospital bill.

Generally, there is no more than 1-2 months worth of expenses dropped into a game prior to announcing it. Much cheaper to cut losses there instead of doing another 16 months of work and having a poor release.

The Movie Theaters do it all the time with much the same model. They actually now have prediction algorithms that tell them roughly how well movies will do against each other, and thus move their releases around accordingly. The game industry it too new and young to figure this out yet, business men won't figure it out, you need a game maker turned businessman. Our repeat success game makers are few and far between, they are just now hitting their 30s headed to the 40s. This will start happening in the future, but the industry isn't mature enough yet.

I've listened to game industry presentations talking about how the movie industry works, but all that came from them were complaints about how that doesn't work for the game industry (mostly due to legislation put in place for movies). The industry knows about it all, it will just take time to do it.
