Recently I've been involved in a beta for the free to play MMO-lite called World of Tanks. Within this game the player has the opportunity to purchase, customize, and drive tanks of various types from the 1920-1950s era into battle.

Players begin with a single light tank from each playable set, sets being grouped by nationality. Currently there are three sets: Russian, German, and American tanks with French, British and others to be released as the game progresses. Purchasing a tanks requires you to progress down the Nation's technology tree. This tree is constructed to give the player an indication of in what order the tanks came to be and as a means of progression. The major tank types are SPG (artillery), Light, Medium, Heavy, and Tank Destroyers. Statistics are taken from the real tanks whenever possible and applied to the tanks in game. Though for fun's sake some liberties have been taken...not to mention some of the tanks that are in the game were prototypes or diagrams that never made it to production.

There are several modes of play: Standard, Practice, and the upcoming Clan Wars mode. Matchmaking for the game's standard 15v15 battle is fast (I've rarely waited more than 30 seconds and that was at 2:00am) and the map chosen is random for each battle. In practice mode the player can be more selective as to who plays with who and on what map, however nothing is gained nor lost during a practice bout beyond knowledge. Clan Wars is yet to be added, however it will feature a large map with sector that can be conquered and claimed by tank battalions (clans).

Overall game play is reminiscent of Counterstrike (with tanks). Environments run the gamut from wetlands to desert and urban to rural. Often there are environment transitions within a singular map. Victory is achieved by destroying all enemy tanks, or by capturing the enemy's base camp.

I recommend that you give it a shot, after all it's free. If you do, Urban_Scorp will likely be online trying to unlock the rest of the as yet incomplete American tank tree. Yay Shermans. ...can't wait for 'em to release the M18 Hellcat.

They may very well be on as early as next week, if all goes according to plan. Free is the best number anyway, so I see no reason to give it a shot. Plus, it looked pretty damn cool.
