Well, I haven't really said anything serious about this yet, but here goes:
This issue is kind of annoying actually. While, personally, I think that it should be a general suggestion to refrain from swearing, it shouldn't be a rule.
Auburn University has absolutely no grounds to restrict what we say, how we say it, or when we say it. Auburn University is a public institution, therefore, it must abide by the U.S. Constitution. The first amendment in this case. In addition, they cannot withhold funds or privileges from university clubs for reasons that are protected by the U.S. Constitution...
This has been affirmed by court cases all across the United States.
Look it up people. |

*Shakes head in dissappointment*
I'm not thrilled, but I'm not taking it that far... Why don't we just say they are being racist because we are all black and\or jewish? |

I'm just going to kick kurt in the balls every time I'm about to swear - that way it won't be me making the club look bad. |

Don't care what the law says. I want this forum to be relatively clean. This club's charter states that our purpose it to raise awareness and fight the prejudices against gamers. It goes completely against this club's purpose to post obscenities on a public forum, and to in general represent those things people consider bad about gamers.
If you want to drop down to politics, how about we try this on for size... the University doesn't have to sponsor us. Dr. Knight doesn't have to tolerate our existence.
You guys have had it easy and are getting cocky. Not so long ago we had faculty members lobbying against us, and had the only building we were given access to turned down for upgrades 2 years in a row, just to try to kill our club. |

I'm not saying that we should swear. I'm saying that the university doesn't have the right to force us not too. And if they stopped "sponsoring" the club due to us swearing, then a good lawsuit would be in hand... |

lawsuit... yes that is exactly the image we as gamers want to project.
Go read our constitution. It has a clause at the VERY beginning stating what we stand for and what our purpose is as a club. If we violate our own purpose clause then we deserve any action taken against us, and I dare say we should take it against ourselves 1st. You have lost sight of the issue.
The issue is we are cursing and projecting not only a poor image of gamers, but of Auburn University. More personal to me is the image of gamers we are projecting. We should not allow ourselves to slip into the acrid mentality of if it isn't illegal we are going to do it just for fun, or to express ourselves. The fact is it turns people off. You wonder why you don't have more women playing games? It is the same reason you don't see a ton of them getting fired up for other male dominated events. It is the image we project and environment that results from it. |

I think you misunderstand me. I have no problem with the club enforcing no swearing or suggesting no swearing, etc. I do have a problem with a public institution (Auburn University is a public institution) telling me what I can or cannot say...
Also, my personal rights to free speech also apply to university clubs. Go read some cases or something.
I don't plan to start swearing all over the place to make a point or something retarded like that... |

Well I'm all for you feeling however you like about the subject.
I am still of the opinion that it goes against our club's purpose and founding statements to allow rampant cursing due to the public image it generates.
On a personal note, I don't mind cursing, I think it has been improperly defined. I think using anything in vain or a cursing mannor is inappropriate, the words themselves are inanimate objects and just because they describe lude acts or unattractive things shouldn't make the words themselves bad. |

That isn't to say I don't do it. But I do try to control it. More so now hat I have a spawn. And I reject your reality where I'm a prude and substitute my own.
You would be surprised how much you are like what I was in college. At least from what I can tell about the subject matter you post, the way you say things, and your language. |

Are you saying that I am less mature now? If you aren't then my comment still stands. I was trying to say I'm seeing a pattern form here that I've seen before.
I'm not trying to say anyone is immature, I'm saying, I've seen people play the Friendly [Cuddly Teddy Bears] on forums over and over, though it is entertaining in the end what I see come of it , is a group form kind of mimicry build around that strong personality, the mimicry then devolves because others aren't as sophisticated when they use their brazen adjectives.
I sat there and thought "You know, that's really not that bad, but the line was drawn at NO cursing. Thank you for your understanding. -Gouji |

I'm quite sure of it. I was in much the same place as you are now in college. I had already blew it at University of South Alabama, and I had a steady girl, found a club I liked, but I was still jaded about my world view, and was slowly discovering why I wanted to get up and go to that class. I thought then as I do now that I am intelligent, and I was and am. Just like I'm sure you are.
I often did (still do) things just to manipulate people, meaning I wanted a certain reaction for games, or I wanted to see what they would do so I could mess with it later. It was fun. I'm not saying your wrong.
I'm just saying, tone it down on the forums, like I had to on the email list. When you are in the lab or out just hanging, let it fly, manipulate the hell out of these jokey's.. I mean jokers. It is quite funny when one storms out of the room cause you tricked him again in the game.
PS. as far as worse goes. Did you ever get awarded a plaque in Hight School for "Most likely to argue with a wall." ? |
