I was wondering what exactly I need to do to become a member. I will be a freshman next school year and am very interested in this club. I have played on consoles for a very long time and have recently taken up PC gaming. Also, I am interested in hearing if you think I should Buy a PC our Build My Own. Please answer in the poll.

Since you've registered on the forums, you're already a "partial member". A "full member" gets a few extra benefits for $5/semester I think it is.

You got any experience building PC's, or will this be your first project? You might be better off by letting me and face do the work - a sort of blend between your two options ^_^ /end shameless self-promo

every gamer who hasn't built their own machine, should at least get one free guided build from a gamer.. IMO.

I've been building computers since I was 12. I have no problem building my own. However, I would be interested in hearing your ideas for different components that I should include in it (i.e. cooling, video, mobo)

If you do the research into overclocking (what cpu/video card you need, how much to spend on cooling) you can save a ton of money.

I saved ~$200 on my CPU by overclocking a 1.8GHz 3000+ Athlon 64 chip to 2.7GHz

You can't get that drastic of an increase with a video card, but you can still get a nice boost.

Ton of helpful people and useful info here: www.extremeoverclocking.com

somehow I doubt that bud, I will believe you have been involved in building and thus don't need hands on help. But I find it hard to believe you built your own at age 12. but OK here is my opinion.

All pc cases, should have 120mm fans, Bigger fans means slower rotation means quieter machine.
Intell is winning the CPU wars right now. Go get a 6600 or as close as you can afford, and over clock the crap out of it.
Asus makes a really nice high end board to go with that CPU

The video card is a toss up right now in my opinion.
400 gets you the best nvidia card on the market the only DX10 card out there.
But 250 gets you a very nice ATI card that will do what you need for now, and it won't be a CPU hogg.
Get 2 gig of ram, watch out for the timings vs the mother board there are some bad combos. They are listed on the mobo makers site.
Pick out a hard drive budget, cut it in 2, buy 2 drives, and raid 0 them. Every time you load a large map, or install a game, thank me. you can do so by saying "kneel before zod"

There is a good start.

When I say I have been building since I was 12, I mean that I have been taking components out and putting new ones in. You are correct in that I didn't put an enitre computer together until I was 14 or 15. sorry if I came off pompous.

First thing you need to learn about gamers is that all the alums are pricks.

As for building, Im a big fan of the shuttle/microATX builds. Now microITX ones can be even nicer but cost about three times as much and are even harder to upgrade.

yea stan, fastB and CD are correct. I don't hold back much of anything, and most people consider me a prick for being so open about things.

So back to you. How much you want to spend?

I remember building my first computer in what must've been around 3rd grade (so what 8,9 years old) Of course I didn't buy all the individual parts by myself, but I vividly remember latching in my first (120MHz CYRIX!) CPU.

(pompousness intended)

and thus I still stand on my belief that children don't build computers. They might assemble them from parts someone else got them, or upgrade a single part, but from selection-ordering-assembly-installing-tweaking that doesn't happen. And I think we will all agree that the gamers are fully capable of all of those steps.

So I gladly congratulate you on putting your lego's together properly after someone told you how to do that. But don't puff it up to be more than it was.

Ok Bandit, whats next?

Technically they are megabloks, but its the same effect. And it is not that bad to type on, surprisingly. I think it gives my server a nice colour boost to its dingy dark hole.

And no I would not sacrifice my legos for this project, and those were the only colours of megabloks I had.
