What's wrong with Seagate? I've had much better experiences with them compared to Maxtor and Western Digital. |

Same. My Seagate drives have been way better than Maxtor or Western Digital. In fact... my WD drives always crap out in about a year. |

Never had a WD die within five years. Never had a Maxtor [I don't care about your foul language policy. Ban me! Ban me like the naughty girl I am!] on me either.
Looks like a solid system - the 650i chipset is rock steady (same chipset in my current box). Since you're spending some cash, might as well get 2 8800's and SLI them bitchez |

maxtor disgraces the six letters that spell out matrox, as for seagate, well they have an affinity for crapping out. check anywhere online, not to mention my own personal experiences... |

Maxtor and WD are generally great, except every so often they have a model that just craps out.
Seagate is ehh...but they juust bought maxtor, so... |

I am eyeing several of the same parts Bandit, but if I may drop the extra money to pick up another 8800 or a PCI card, more monitors will be needed. I should be getting my copy of xplane in a couple days so the 4-5 monitor option should be kept open. You know, for Panquake and simply because it is cool.
But for now I must go figure out the best way to strip IDE cables... I was foolish and did not order wiring harnesses for my converters. So now I must strip and apply quick connects two atleast one of my converters so I can have an arcade shooter setup ready for Momocon, and a Neogeo one ready for Tigerlan. Not to mention that official Ms Pacman joystick I ordered for 8080 era gaming...
Oh and Bandit, we spoke of multimonitor displays some time ago, well heres the king of them all:
http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/ga ... p;mon=desc
And you lot who know who you are, dont even bother posting that 100 projector deal, that is not even feasable in most cases. |

OK so the wife is telling me I'm a bit high. I got some points for explaining to her that ATI/AMD aren't holding up their end of the market pressure, so prices are generally higher this time for the same level of jump up. (remember I buy every year so she is used to me spending)
So guys, what would you cut back on and why? If I get down to 1500 she will be happy, I can get away with less cutting than that. Honestly I could get away with this whole purchase, but I'm trying to win some points, without loosing too much functionality.
What do you think? |

Loose the wife and get a more expensive computer
</jk>
But anyways, you could possibly cut down to 2GB or ram and just use your old hds and opticals....
Btw, is that GeIL 4GB pack any good? (I've not built a computer in several years, so I don't remember the good companies.... Although, I just realized you could easily put 8GB in most mainboards these days ) |

The hard drive idea is a great one. I have a number of spare drives right now, that are in a linux raid. I could rip some out of that. Great idea.
I really hate dropping down the ram, but I guess you are right I could live without 4 GB for now.
Geil is a good company, not an off brand. That is about all I can say about them.
Ok I stepped down the ram from 450 to 390 in price but in doing so went from CAS of 5 to a CAS of 6. |

but at $60, I think its worth keeping the 4 gigs. Other than keeping the older components, I dont think there is much to suggest other than doing it in steps. |

4gb worth it -
Btw bandit, I would suggest changing your PSU - you shouldn't require 850W, even with all that hardware packed in. See about picking up a 700w. And you gotta make sure to buy quick - newegg likes to play the rebate game and change prices on you in a short time. |

Know that if you go with 4GB, you'll only be able to use ~3GB in 32bit XP/Vista. |
