Hardware - Building a new paperweight, I mean specialized pc. fastbilly1 - Jul 27, 2005 - 09:10 PM Post subject: Building a new paperweight, I mean specialized pc.
I was told Bandit knows a bit about the shuttle styled cases. So I figured Id ask on the fourms.
I am planning on building a shuttle/cube pc on a budget of around $500 for a hometheater pc, with alittle gaming on the side. My thoughts have landed on the EPoX EX5-300n:

For its size, amount of inherit power, and the fact I wouldnt have to buy a graphics card when I bought it. Granted that limits the second aspect of what I want to do with it, but thats ok, for now. The rest of what I am looking at:
And Generic Samsung DVD rom - which is still up in the air. Might just work with a cddrive till I have the money for the DVD burner upgrade.
All of which comes out to just about $500 with shipping. So if anyone out there has any suggestions of what to change, incompatibilites, potential heat issues, just tell me. Also I dont plan on overclocking any time soon.
Im pretty set on the shuttle/cube case, wanted one since release and I need the portablility. I do not really need the xp2800, but the other chips I wanted they are sold out of. So any ideas?Bandit - Jul 28, 2005 - 04:10 AM Post subject: RE: Building a new paperweight, I mean specialized pc.
I'm not sure you can do much more with $500 price limit. That 333 FSB is gonna hurt your performance I think.Strangel - Jul 28, 2005 - 05:51 AM Post subject: RE: Building a new paperweight, I mean specialized pc.
i'm running 333fsb right now, but only because my cpu runs on 333fsb (athlon xp 2600+). the fsb won't affect you as much as it would bandit, so i'd say not to worry about that, sounds good to me
For the hard drive, I personally have the serial ata version of this drive:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3160021A 160GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive

not much of a price difference there, so i thought i'd point it out. I've had it since spring of 2003 - it's whisper quiet, reliable as a rock, and performs pretty well. i still see it used in alot of newer benchmarks for comparisons. i don't see the samsung name much anymore in terms of hard drives, but i have an old 8gb samsung drive i've had since 1999 and it's been a good drive as well.
the rest of your list looks just great, i like the case...wish my current rig would fit in something like that
