Well, I would compare it to Doom 3. Except that Doom 3 sucked and even if you multiplied D3 by infinity it wouldn't be as good as F.E.A.R.
The story is the standard horror filler story..
The graphics are awesome. Some of the best I've seen in any game. This is really one of those games that you upgrade your computer to play.
F.E.A.R. actually managed to get me to jump out of my chair a few times though. I'm not the type to get scared easily either. And it's not "Monster-jump-out-of-dark-corner" creepiness. Well, you just have to play it.
One of the major things that I enjoy about the game is the fighting. The firearms feel powerful, and they ARE powerful. A quick shot to the head and the standard grunt enemy dies. There is a flipside, however, as you seem to have as much HP as the standard grunt, so you die just as fast. This isn't a game for Rambo style runnin' and gunnin' as you will die in a heartbeat.
Most of the weapons are "bullet based", although there are a few futuristic weapons. There are also grenades that can be "off-hand thrown" sort of like Halo. Plus proximity mines and remote detonation charges. You can also do several different melee attacks like the standard "weapon bash" and a few jump-kicks.
Now for the best part: The AI. The AI in F.E.A.R. is outstanding. Enemies work in groups to kill you. They will jump through windows, dive and roll, stick their weapon around the corner and shoot. They knock over various objects to use as cover. They will use supressing fire to pin you down while a buddy flanks you. They are excellent at throwing grenades to land at your feet.. etc etc
The only thing they do that seems stupid is talk out loud on their comms to each other, sometimes giving away tactical info. But I sort of liked this because it reminds me of the marines in Half-Life 1....
I could go on about a zillion things, but you get the point. And if anything seems incoherent it's because I just finished a 4 hour maths study...
EDIT: Oh yeah, sort of stressing the powerful weapons point. There don't seem to be any "useless" weapons. All of them kill easily. Hell, even the starting pistol is powerful (Especially when you get to use two at once).
And on another note, you can only carry three weapons at a time. Sort of like FarCry (although you have four in FC).
I did notice a bug (or feature?) with the weapons. If I had it in my inventory and picked up a weapon it adds less ammo then if you don't have the weapon. For example, I have a weapon with no ammo left. I pick up another one and it gives me ten rounds. But if I swap the empty weapon out with another, and then swap that temporary weapon with the weapon that has ammo that I wanted to reload, it gives me 50 rounds or so... |

yeah the AI is the best part; absolutely amazing...
weapon system: sometimes clunky but realistically re-enacts how it is in a fire fight, IMO.
graphics: gotta love bullet time when it is actually done right... and the graphics are very crippling(IE they will cripple your system.)
But the effects are awesome, the ricochets and smoke clouds, although i dont like the tracers bullets( or thats kinda waht they seem like to me)
sound: good enough to keep you enthralled. will jump out at you and sets the mood for the game.
physics: good but not the best. not quite on HL2's level but it is good.
gameplay: great. simply put great. one of the few times I played the demo more than twice before getting the game. even though the demo was buggy(like most demos)
scarefactor: again good enough to keep you playing it.
story: ehh, similar to games before it.
all in all i would say buy it if you can support it. you shouldnt be disappointed |

graphics = not crippling (But then, I did recently upgrade a few parts)
bullet-time = very well done
level immersion = extreme
creep factor = great
hand-to-hand combat = no place for it in an FPS but they did the best they could
physics = well done, I'd say better than hl2 (the physics engine is limited by CPU, duh)
It's just so satisfying to turn the corner and blast a grunt in two with the trusty shotgun. Anyone else notice that every blockbuster FPS has a shotgun? Further, anyone else notice that when you get the shotgun, regardless of game, you tend to use it more than anything else, including toilet paper? Although, the HVAR is pretty nifty - pin a guy to the wall and let him hang from the HVAR dart you artfully placed through his skull. Love it. |

I heard the AI was still on somewhat of a track, i.e. if you play the game over, they do about the same thing every time. This true or no? |

I've heard they don't. And Vandyl, that's because we all know how much shotguns kick ass, though I tend to use it only for heavy jobs, when machine guns don't work as well. |

I dunno, I didn't use the shotgun that much. It had an unrealistic falloff for damage. I mostly used the nail gun, machine gun, and that gun that just left skeletons (forgot what it's called)... I played quite a bit of the game the other day using mostly dual pistols. The pistols are quite powerfull actually |

Its so no longer a demo when you finish the game, even if you did skip like 8 hours of game play ;oP |

Yeah I was surprised they finished it. Some of the best parts are in the middle. The end dissapointed me compared to the rest of the game. |

I think it's wonderful that Monolith finally managed to make a game that is being both critically praised across the board and (with any luck) bought across the board. I know I'm saving up... or asking for it for Christmas.
The fellows who made Blood still have it. |

Very true. Although I'm a big proponent of original content, I'd love to revisit the No One Lives Forever, Aliens vs Predator, and Shogo universes - talk about underappreciated games!!! |

Hey, what can I say - I hadn't had time to play the game in probably two weeks so when I realized just how far into it we were, to hell with quitting! I'm a gamer, I finish the fights. Besides, you can't tell me you've never read the last few pages of a book before turning to the front and beginning your paper.
Thankyouverymuch - would like to thank Remington and their Buckshot, Heckler and Koch for their USP .45 Compact, whoever thought it'd be cool to run around with a rocket launcher (even if it is just an RPG), the guy who totaled two pickup trucks demonstrating that a rail-gun is attainable and it will kill you, and my mom. Hi mom! |
