Awesome. Must use.

It's what Vista should have been. The beta is extremely stable (hey, it's just vista with a new UI!) and the improvements are awesome. To name a few:

- Much faster boot
- The new taskbar is awesome (even though it's ripped off from OSX)
- Quick window sizing is great
- 'Reverse Symlinked' (best name i could come up with) folders are awesome
- Windows update handles pretty much everything now, even video card drivers.

Yes. I would get it from a torrent though and just compare checksums because Microsoft's dload servers are.. @#$@ed.

If you can't get a key I can give you one... they supposedly work unlimited times.

Yep. It's basically a Vista service pack... that you get to pay for!

There are a few underlying changes and enhancements though....

I like the "Libraries" they've introduced. Useful for organizing multiple folders and what not.

Haven't seen any real performance gain/loss vs windows xp (I'm dual booting my desktop atm) - but I can tell that 7 is a bit snappier than vista.

Driver issues abound (of course, it's a beta release) for the 64bit version, but I was able to work around most of those by installing in compatibility mode for vista.

So far, I like what I see. I haven't really had time to get deep with it yet.

this is a semi-related note - I haven't bothered installing any office/productivity suite in 7, so I've been using google docs to view and print (requires adobe reader) various attachments I've received -- I gotta say, google docs is pretty impressive.

just ran need for speed: undercover - ended up crashing during the opening chase (probably a sound driver issue heh heh) - but it seemed to run better in a dx10 environment. The game definitely looked better (smoke, pooled water/oil on the road) than it does in dx9. once they get the driver issues worked out, it looks like windows 7 is going to be fairly game-friendly in comparison to vista.

I've come across an annoying problem that I haven't been able to figure out yet.

The 'start menu search thingy' that I used almost exclusively to open programs in vista (and a similar function in Linux) is borked.

It worked fine when I first installed, but now when I try it, half the time it pops up an 'Open With' dialog with the file 'Kurt' to open. It's like it's trying to open my username.

It always happens on the same files. And not just programs. If I try to open certain libraries or directories some open correctly and others don't. It's not permissions as I already checked (although, sometimes if you run as admin it doesn't bork.. sometimes it still does), It's not whether it's pinned on my taskbar or the location on the drive. It's not read/write flags. It seems totally random except that it happens consistently on some files it affects. Hopefully I'll figure it out before it drives me mad.

maybe it's trying to index your mind in order to provide more accurate search results?

I finally got around to putting this on a VM. Overall, it's pretty good, but I'm not sure about the new default task bar layout. I know I can make it work/look like Vista, but I'm trying to do what they say. I really miss my quick launch bar, not sure what the replacement is supposed to be. The blog says they want it to go away but doesn't say how to get the equivalent functionality.

Oh, and I still hate the Vista/7 style programs menu. It's like it got in trouble and they put it into a little corner until it could act right. What's wrong with the XP-style programs menu but with the added [fantastic] search/run feature?

Well, the way the default win7 taskbar works is like a hybrid of the quicklaunch/taskbar of previous windows versions. I haven't looked into adding new programs to the bar, but I imagine there is a way to do it.

I always hated the quicklaunch bar (and was always disabled for me) so maybe I just don't miss it!

You can right-click on something and "Pin to Taskbar" and that acts like the Quick Launch. But there is some added functionality now to the taskbar icons that is supposed to replace the need for it, but I've yet to really see how. I can see it for special apps like Windows Explorer. It's pinned by default and right-clicking gives you two-click access to commonly used folders (I had a link to my Download folder in Quick Launch) so that replaces some of that. I'm not sure how all of browsers are going to line up though. I want all of them pinned. It would be nice if they all went into a list with my default being first, but I'm not sure if it's that smart.

There is actually a way to add the quick launch back, but the blog says "we're hoping people will find they don't need it" so I doubt it's coming back without popular demand.

The RC is much better than the Beta at that. Also 7 is _not_ Vista. From what I understand they trashed the vista code and rewrote it, but just used the same styling (thus saving time on making it look different to focus on making the actual OS work better [what matters]).

I have been using it, RC1 is defiantly better than beta...and vista, only issue i have had is that google earth royally messes up the 64bit version. don't know about the 32bit and google earth though

You're getting you info confused. The post XP Windows OS rewrite was forked. One branch was Vista the other Windows 7. Some of the code from Vista made it to 7, but not much.

So to say Windows 7 is or isn't Vista doesn't really apply. They are more like siblings, actually kind of like Twins the movie. Vista is the short fat guy, Windows 7 is Arnold.
