So basically in the interest of security they are removing an option used by a mostly insubstantial minority of their consumer base.
I'd be right with ya in calling shenanigans, if I cared. |

Fact remains that the device you bought is now less useful than advertised at the time of purchase. |

I believe you can choose not to update the firmware. That said, I still agree that disabling features after purchase is somehow illegal. |

OtherOS sucked anyways. It didn't allow any access to pretty much any of the hardware... |

You're still left with install the update and have a feature disabled(OS), or not install the update and have a feature disabled(Store). Either answer is a less useful PS3. |

The third option is to wait for a hardware/software crack that will allow the now disabled OS and still be able to update. I suggest holding your breath for this alternative |

One should not have to crack their device to allow it to work the same way it did when initially sold to them.
Granted xen will kill me for my analogy here but what if all of the sudden they took out DVD playback? It would still play PS3 games and play BluRay, but now it didnt play DVDs. It is another minuscule feature that only a handful of the userbase cares about BUT it is a function that someone was using that is now gone. That is not right in my book. |

What if it crashes every Tuesday and they patched it to remove that functionality? |

Just calling out that the details matter. If someone takes advantage of a security hole to offer a new useful feature, and then the manufacturer patches that hole, it could be seen as "removing functionality from when you purchased the device". |

This is about a highly advertised feature. Not an unpublished fluke. |
