How much actual competition do you guys do?
Whatever happened to KOTN? King Of The Net?
Whatever happened to the officers challenge?
Whatever happend to the Burger King challenge?
DO you have a Seargent of Arms?
Does anyone make mods to games or maps?
Does anyone challenge each other anymore?
I'm curious because these are some of the best memories I have of AU Gamers while I was there. |

I've been challenging tek, and kurts been challenging everyone, and there is an occassionaly dispute challenge, but we are pretty laid back, lol.

I'm not sure you know what KOTN was, based on your response.
KOTN was a way to get our competition on, and to accomplish one of the main goals of the club as stated in the charter. KOTN was originally a simple ranking of each game we played, where players could challenge each other to be placed in the ranking. At the end of the Quarter the ranks were summed up, and the lowest score was the KOTN. The KOTN got increased powers, privileges, bragging rights, and sometimes prizes, if we had a good PR officer at the time. Later it was an email list challenge system where each player in a challenge made on the email list prior to the meeting was worth 50 points. The challenge poster set the game, rules, maps, point distribution and whatnot. If no one played the match was worth nothing, if 2 or more played you multiplied the number of players by 50 and that was the points that could be awarded. Every couple of weeks we would have a big match that was worth a set amount usually 2k or so. In the end what this did was get people to play games they normally wouldn't to create more rounded gamers, and more interaction amongst gamers to prevent sub groups forming in the club.
People like me who were very good at certain games, couldn't get people to play me. So I would make challenges where I would be a single man team and others were teams of 2. Or I would not touch the mouse for the 1st 3 minutes of game, and then I would start playing. Odd rules like that cause the challenger to try to balance the game with skill, to get people to play.
The officers challenge: Every week the officers had to come up with a game where the officers would play vs the entire club. All kinds of screwy rules, maps, and mods were devised to try to make a 15 vs 4 game even. This was partly the reason for Sergent of Arms to be selected by the officers. They did this intermittently to help stack the team in their favor. At some points we had the KOTN from last Quarter be an officer too for the challenges.
The Burger King challenge was one silly game each week created by the last KOTN, and sometimes others. Once it was a HL map created by Lynx that had one tunnel with the bug gun in the end of the tunnel. Only when you grabbed the gun you were teleported 100 ft over the top of the map in free fall to your doom. It was an atempt to make me not use the bug gun anymore. I discovered how to get the gun, and all hell broke loose, it was quite funny.
People are probably not interested in your maps because they have nothing at all on the line. No bragging rights, no points, no creative push to top the last weird map. |

in which case you should change up the rules so it is more of a fair fight. |

CDplaya I will take you up on that, I can play three players at once, would you believe two? How about one and a rowboat?
On a less Maxwell Smart note, Gamers changed from the highly competitive style to more laid back when Solo was president. I am not saying Solo was lazy...well maybe I am, but the dynamic changed it is actually why I stayed with the club. Stick did bring back KOTN, as you remember, but the majority of gamers nowaday are either supremely competitive or play simply for fun. When I was there the lot was mostly the second, sans tournament time. |

Don't care if it is NES or NEO-GEO. I say you get one pick, I get one and let Evan pick one. |

OK well this is great, that you guys are actually challenging each other. But once these few challenges are over what then? I think you should start up the ladders again, and keep track of them on the website.
You know if you had an automated way of issuing challenges, and reporting them, you would get a lot more use out of the system, and see alot more creative challenges happen. |

ah tut tut... just a moment here.
One of the keys to a system is that you decide how it functions 1st so as not to alienate others. Are you running the ladder based system where you challenge individuals above you? Or are you running a point based system where you challenge the world, and the interested parties join up?
You don't want a system that is vague, otherwise it leads arguments. |

Anyone up for making some simple software for club to issue challenges in games and track them? I have a server we can use for sql.
(All who would like too send me a message and I will put out the list of everyone who will help develop. Then we can all meet and organize.)
Of course the other option is to make THIS a contest between all of us CSer's >=) |
