All right, guys. Now that we're sure we're going to have the tournament at TigerLan, here's the general structure of the competition:

      Quote:
Prelims:
We're going to try to get in as many preliminary matches done before our scheduled competition time as we can, to narrow it down to our final four players. Either Thomas or I will be there with a match list, so check in with us when you have some free time and we'll get you playing in the prelims of the tournament.

Tournament placement will be made on a first come, first serve basis--so, if we end up with a total of twenty people signed up, the last eight to sign up will play the first round, with the four winners advancing to the second round, with sixteen players competing, and so on.

For all preliminary matches, winner will be the best in two out of three games. We'll expect saved replays (if you don't know how to save a replay, ask one of us).

Semi- and Finals:
Both of the finals rounds will be held during our scheduled competition time, with matches of three out of five games instead of two out of three. We'll hopefully have a projector showing an observer screen and some commentary, if we can wrangle a way to do so without upsetting the balance of the matches.

The maps we'll be using are here; they are not likely to change, but I'll keep you informed in case they do.

If you're interested in signing up, go ahead and do, either by PMing me or posting in here--we'll have an easier time setting up for the competition if we have a rough idea of how many people are coming. If you're signing up, make sure to give me your name and the nick you'll be playing under.

So I've been coming to gamers for a few months now, and I plan on participating in TigerLan, but I have a proposal that may interest some of you:

Since Starcraft 2's announcement, many who have played Starcraft in the past seem to be drifting back to it, including myself. The seriously fun RTS to be found in SC is hard to match, truth be told. The game has a long history of great playing, and is the heart of perhaps the most intense professional gaming community, at least in terms of fan base and size (yes, I mean Korea). The GOM StarLeague recently introduced the first live English-commentated progames to the world. It's been more than ten years since the release of SC, and still it's one game that any gamer worth his snuff will recognize.

With that said, I would like to introduce a more...local component into the mix. The ASL, or Auburn StarLeague, is intended to unite interested parties in Auburn to play SC on friendly terms. Also, of course, we plan to broker ruthless battles to the death, at least until SC2 comes out.

For now, though, we have merely this proposal: Would the powers-that-be allow, provided enough interest, for the fledgling Auburn StarLeague to host our own tournament during TigerLan?

Regardless of the answer, we would still like anyone interested to join us, in LANs, Battle.net, or elsewhere--if you're interested, just post or message me here, or look us up on facebook, the group "Auburn Starcraft League"

I think it would be a great idea. But that's just my opinion.

I seriously read that as Age/Sex/Location/Starcraft?

Even if not a part of TigerLAN, I think there should be some inter-group communication...

In my own defense, the original title was just "ASL?" in an attempt to confuse and entice.

If we ever get an official reply from the planning committee Wink we'll start moving on organizing either a tournament at TigerLan or at another time and place, and, of course, I'll make sure to keep you guys informed either way.

Once again, a shameless plug to anyone who wants first notice of any LANs or tutorial days that we hold should join the facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10252217327

I edited the post under the motivation that just seeing TigerLAN and StarCraft in the same subject would cause the thread to get more hits.

I approved there being a StarCraft tournament at TigerLan 14. It will be placed as a last tournament for one of the days. More information on this will come later...

Wouldn't having the display on a projector allow opposing players to see things they shouldn't?

Yeah, if the players can see the display. I'm hoping there'll be a way to get the players out of sight; if not, we'll just have to scrap the projector plan.

Based on how the room is setup, there really isnt a good way to do that. An observation pc on the other end of the room is probably going to be your best option there. That should also be the case during AvP, less you get a human on there, but then it will be boring.

The observation PC would be the best bet. Put it as an end-cap on a row of PCs.

u u u u u
(cabling) <
n n n n n

"<" is the observation PC.
"u" and "n" are player PCs.
The opening of the character represents the monitor direction.

One of the maps I got to check out that was said to be played during the SC tourney seems to be nothing but a click fest and allows very minimal movement for ground troops. Can we possibly have something that offers more challenge than just something like who can click the fastest?

I'm sorry; which map are you referring to? Some friends and I have played all of these maps several times and we haven't experienced anything like that.

Jungle Run..... it is basically two sides and a river in between. I know it isn't just me because I took this map to battle net and had the exact same problem with everyone I played with. I just think we should be using maps that give no team an advantage with money or anything. This would allow for it to be strategy based not a click fest that inevitably ends with mass amounts of chaos ... IMO

That isn't one of the maps we'll be playing on at TigerLan. Maps are:

Blitz X
Bifrost 3
Python
Lost Temple
Tau Cross

You can download the versions we'll be using in a zip that's linked in the original post. Here it is again: http://www.t1.templarian.com/ASL_TL.zip
It'll probably be best to play them all as UMS because they're observer maps; if you play them as 1v1 or melee the base spawn areas will be messed up.

On the subject of the projector--what if we just had the players facing in the opposite direction, with a referee watching them both from behind?

The room won't really work out that way unfortunately.
