Fighting Choices:
Street Fighter 4
Guilty Gear X
Soul Calibur 4
Dead or Alive 4
Virtua Fighter
Please inform anyone who does not regularly visit the forums to vote.
Polls will close March 24th!
The polls are purposely put up with games that can be played on multiple consoles and therefore versions. Which system/version will depend on how many of each system/version show during the lan or an executive decision on my part. This means, if you have a preferred version, bring it and have any updates ready for the exclusive use during the tournament. |

Street Fighter 4 is a clear winner in this category, for sure.
Deep gameplay, flashy graphics so everyone will want to play it, good franchise as a whole, doesn't induce seizures like guilty gear (i like this game but tone down the colors arksys wth), came out this year, and it's popular. the 360 version sold out here in auburn on release day at every store me and my one of my friends went to. |

| Virtua Fighter was a better series, but it was more complicated. Thus just like SC is a simpler game, it was preferred over other more in depth games simply because more people played it. |

I wouldn't call VF a "better" series, I'd think DOA, SC, MK, or Tekken a better series, with personal preference leaning toward SC and MK. And SF, GG, and Mv* are the same game essentially. But really, we're comparing apples to oranges in many cases with these. The 2D ones are vastly different animals from the 3D ones, and I mean 2D/3D movement, not game engines. Then there are more divisions between those, just due to game play conventions. For instance, Tekken favors a left/right short-combo scheme that relies on reflexes and timing, but SC favors a more strategic horizontal/vertical/guard system that relies heavily on combining those over time (much like Killer Instinct's combos). MK was all about memorizing and implementing the longest combos you could, same with many of the other 2D fighters. VF is mostly about timing, positioning, and countering. It's really all about what you're after.
Personally, I like the SC series best because it has almost no learning curve, the button combinations for the specials are intuitive, and it still takes a long time to master. And if you're a "master" but playing sloppy a newbie can kick your ass, much like in real life.
One of my favorites though was a little known title for the XBox: Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus. It is similar in feel to VF but combos were based much more on the correct timing of the button presses. The end product though was a lot of fun, more like MK. And there is a fighting ballerina. Overall though, it wasn't a very impressive game. |
VF is mostly about timing, positioning, and countering.
Exactly, it is a better simulation of actual fighting, translated to a game. Which is why I said better. You are evaluating them on a game for the sake of gaming, which is probably the better way to evaluate them. But I found VF to be more interesting personally, because for the most part moves appeared to be simulated not fanciful magic. Around about the same time it showed up in arcades and at home, Ultimate Fighting showed up for rental and then a couple years later showed up in Dothan. Between the game VF the videos UF and some real life fights where I tried some of the moves and was surprised they actually worked, I both VF and UF were permanently seared in my psyche. If it weren't for that I would probably have always gone back to SF, simply because I was good at it, I never liked the super combos of games like KI. |

| Let's try to shy away from the 360 version of fighters because the controller is not well made for playing such games. |

| I think you should all have to play with the controllers upside down either in your hand or with you upside down. |

Then he would truly deserve the crown in this genra, as a matter of fact if he's that good he should be making the rules. Only he knows how to make this challenging for him and still fun for everyone.
When are we going to have another officer's challenge? |

| xero that only works in games that I know how to play. That means fighters not in the vs series are no go. Granted I have an understanding of Third Strike, but I am still rubbish at it... It has been years since I have tried a fighter with my feet, the last one was Soul Calibur 2 at your place where I beat Jonesy one round out of 10...him and his cheap Hwaong kept dodging my whip attacks. |
