I was just curious as to whether there was going to be decent prizes for the PC Team FPS this time around. As opposed to paying $20 (x5 for 5 people in each team), and then first place walks away with f*cking WoW pins and matchbox cars....
just a thought |

| Most of our prizes are determined by sponsor donations however some of the prizes are bought. So far I cannot say what will be the prize but it will not be pins or matchbox cars. I intend for each first place prize to be significant with alternate choices and slightly lesser prizes as with lower ranking. |

| Earlier this year, my friend and I won the gears of war tourney and it didn't even cover our entry fee. The prizes have to get better for me to come and play again. |

Mostly, I have this to say:
a) Corn unpop is sad occurrence.
b) Your tale of your tournament spoils not covering your entry fee fills me with manic delight. Please, be so kind as to inform me as to how any tournament which can't give out cash prizes (as it's on the auburn campus) can possibly cover an entry fee.
c) How many free hamburgers can I gain for a dollar?
d) matchbox cars, while admittedly not as cool as hot wheels, are still the pwn.
e) Obv, WoW is teh bettar.
f) Seriously, TigerLAN as a tournament is run almost by the charity of the gamer's club, a non-profit organization. You're not paying the club to go sit on yachts and drink fancy-fied champagne. You're paying so that next semester the club can afford to rent the Foy rooms and projection equipment and tables and drinks and food and silly prizes and fun.
g) 42yr/o swm lff tdh in praking lt w/graden hseo.
h) If you understood g), write your answer on the back of a 50-dollar bill and send it post-haste to the poster. If you do not paste this on 80 friend lists and other, unique message boards you will be haunted by the ghost of unluck and hastiness for the remainder of your days also your one trew love will be found at Auburn but you won't know because you pass his gravesite on the way to work.
i) all of the above
j) none, or some, of the above
k) fewer, marks (of punctuation)
l) there is no point l.
m) Marking m on your scantron will result in a failure of this examination.
fin. Turn in your tests at the front to the man in the rubber gloves. |

nope, and quit editing my f**ing posts
b) manic delight..?? seriously..? a prize can be considered to hold a value. If this value exceeds the cost of the entry fee, then it is possible for an organization which can't give out cash prizes to cover an entry fee.
f) Lets say for example that 35 people came to the last TigerLAN and competed, lets also say that 10 more people on top of that came, but did not compete and therefore did not pay the extra $10 competition fee. (I believe these numbers err on the conservative side as well). Therefore, 35 * $20 + 10 * $10 = $800. lets say prizes cost you $150 for the event. How is it possible that a STUDENT non-profit organization would be charged $650 for a 2 day reservation (which it seems should provide tables, since they have events that use tables all the time) at a "Student Center" and a couple of projectors from the university as well?? [I did not include food and drinks in my calculations, as I dont remember there being any food or drinks there] |

To quell this before it gets out of hand...
Club gets money from a handful of members and TigerLAN. Full members are rare and provide basically no funds, generally not even enough per semester to purchase a new game. TigerLAN helps fill that gap. There's a bit more that goes into TL aside from the room and prizes. Don't forget that we also try to provide power, networking, food, and door prizes as well as the competition prizes.
Usual Breakdown (at least when I was doing it):
- TL: Overnight fees for Foy room (~150)
- TL: A/V rental fees (~50)
- TL: Flyers and advertising (>50, should be >200)
- TL: Food and drinks (~150)
- TL: Supplies (paper, labels, etc) (~20)
- TL: Prizes (>200)
- TL: Occasional new network equipment (0-300)
- TL: Occasional new power equipment (0-200)
- New games for club library (yearly 0-200)
- Buffer zone in case of lulls in participation (100-200)
We try to depend on sponsors to promote their products as competition prizes, but the bar for good sponsorships has been moved to about 300 attendees. With that in mind we do need to start focusing more on quality prizes and less filler.
Also, don't forget the people running TL are generally novices and never ran something like it. It is usually a matter of whomever is willing to lead it as opposed to who is capable as it takes a lot of time and energy and the only reward is the event itself.
The spirit of the event is supposed to be having fun playing games with old/new friends. The competitions are supposed to be more for bragging rights than the prizes. However, we keep finding that the prizes bring in the people. But we also find that big prizes bring in people just for the competitions, then they leave and don't play any other games, which kinda misses the point. There's a line there we try to walk, but sometimes we fall off.
But hey, it's fun! |

Back on topic, fellas. Even if this is a sad and pathetic topic anyway.
Tell you what, I'll belly dance for the winner of any tournament who feels his prizes are inadequate this year. |

| Bawls has been a sponsor since TL5. SteelSeries sponsors occasionally. Razer takes a few hundred to get sponsored. We have a list of about 50 potentials to contact, it's really a matter of if the coordinator actually contacts them... *stifles a glare* |
